Commercial Aerospace - ECOJET
9/23/2007 5:19:30 PM

One of the biggest challenges the aerospace industry has to over come is the public perception that the sommercial aerospace industry is environmentally unfriendly.  Boeing released the Dreamliner which was boasted to be the 'greenest' commercial airliner.  Now we have the release of the ECOJET.  The budget short haul carrier EasyJet recently unvieled its Ecojet airline model which helped give the aerospace industry a vision of the future.  The most obvious difference between the Ecojet concept and a today's standard airframe designs is the tail section of the airliner.  The aft section of the craft houses two large propfan engines.  These rear mounted open rotor engines provide unrivaled environmental performance for short haul travel.  This comes in the maintenance of these engines which are mounted unter the wing throughfore the rear mounted engine is the best solution.  This unusually designed aircraft was based on designs that Airbus and Boeing had already under consideration.

CFM International and Pratt and Whitney which are powerplant manufacturers admit that they are evaluating open roter engine design alongside traditional geared turbodfans.  The manufacturers both feel that the introduction of traditional geared technology into a open rotor design is possible but aren't positive when it would be available.

Andy Harrison, CEO of EasyJet, notes that the aerospace technology is available to develop the EcoJet which would be 25% quieter and emit 50% less carbon dioxide.  This could be another great step to providing a 'greener' airline for the aerospace industry.

StraightAERO announces its commercial aerospace tools
9/7/2007 10:47:53 AM

Straight Aero announces its free commercial aviation parts search tools.  StraightAero was born out of the commercial aerospace parts business.  The tools that parts resellers, OEMs, and repair stations have not been avaialble through easily accessible and economical means.  StraightAero is here to assist with those needs.  We offer several free services such as manufacturer reference and company directory searchs as well as a free community forum to have questions answered around part modification, sales, assistance with part requests, service techniques and general community.  These types of tools are available commercially by other companys such as the World Aviation Directory and AvRef but they are unaffordable to the small to mid market company's that are the foundation to the aviation industry.

Since we are striving to make this site more user friendly and increase the tool set ... please give us your suggestions in the suggestion area on the forum...

Thank you

Paris Air Show News - GEnx Engine Completes Flight Tests
8/23/2007 9:40:58 AM

General Electric says that with 34 flights and 187 hours in the air, its GEnx engine has completed its four months of flight-testing aboard the GE 747 flying test-bed, accomplishing major objectives, including aircraft level testing in support Boeing's 787 Dreamliner program.

"During the flight tests on GE's 747 flying test-bed, we verified the GEnx engine's design and electrical requirements for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner," said Tom Brisken, general manager of the GEnx program. "We conducted numerous tests with maximum horsepower extraction on the starter generators, demonstrated engine operability while generating the maximum electric power requirements envisioned for the 787 aircraft and confirmed the ability of the GEnx engine to successfully restart in flight at various conditions within the 787 flight envelope."

According to GE, the flight test program required extensive modifications on GE's 747 flying test-bed, including the installation of a heat exchanger to dissipate the energy created by the two starter generators on the GEnx engine. GE's flying test-bed campaign validated the GEnx-1B engine's performance in real world flight conditions, which cannot be fully achieved during ground testing, said a GE statement.

The GEnx engine has demonstrated levels of NOX, hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide emissions lower than pre-test predictions and significantly better than present and future regulations. The GEnx's advanced twin-annular, pre-swirler or TAPS combustor will produce fewer smog-causing emissions than the maximum allowed by 2008 international standards or up to 94 percent margin to those future standards, according to GE.

In addition, successfull bird ingestion certification tests were carried out at the Peebles, Ohio, outdoor test facility. The tests required ingestion of four 2.5 lb. birds and one 5.5 lb bird, while maintaining required levels of thrust. The GEnx passed the tests with minimal fan blade distress or loss of thrust, validating the GEnx's wide chord composite blades developed from the GE90 family of engines.

Space Station (ISS) Status 6/29/07
8/23/2007 9:36:50 AM

After the departure of the space shuttle Atlantis, Expedition 15 Commander Fyodor Yurchikhin and Flight Engineer Oleg Kotov returned to their daily operations aboard the International Space Station this week, while newly arrived Flight Engineer Clay Anderson began conducting scientific experiments.

Atlantis landed in California June 22, 2007, after delivering a new starboard truss segment and a set of solar arrays to the station. Returning on the shuttle was Sunita Williams, who lived and worked aboard the orbiting complex for six months. Anderson succeeded Williams on the station and arrived with the Atlantis crew on June 10.

Anderson performed his first Saturday Science activity on June 23, showing younger television viewers how Newton's laws apply to sports activities, even in the microgravity of space.

Boeing Announces General Shalikashvili Retirement from Board
8/23/2007 9:32:02 AM

According to an statement issued today by the Boeing Company, General John M. Shalikashvili, a Boeing director since 2000, has informed the Boeing board of directors that he will not stand for re-election when his term expires later this year.

Shalikashvili, 69, cited other business commitments and health reasons in his decision, said Boeing Chairman, President and CEO Jim McNerney. "Shali has a record of service and accomplishment that is truly distinguished, and serving alongside him on the Boeing board has been a privilege," McNerney said. "He brought to Boeing great personal and professional strengths--common sense and an intuitive feel for what is right; a deep concern for people and their welfare; and a broad, deep understanding of global affairs. Our people and our business are better for having had the benefit of his service."

Shalikashvili is retired chairman of the U.S. Department of Defense Joint Chiefs of Staff and former commander-in-chief of all U.S. forces in Europe. He served on the board's audit and finance committees, and chaired its special programs committee.
